Android App Updates

Posted by AJ | Jan 9 2011 | 21:17 EST | Discuss |
Beer Suggest Android Application Screenshot

It's been almost 6 months since my last update, and I suppose it's a good time for some new information. The Android application is coming along very well. When I first started, I thought it would have only one feature, and that was to locate beer places(restaurants, stores, bars and homebrew shops) near you. It has since expanded and now includes a lot more. Some features to look forward to:

  • Beer Search
  • Beer Rating
  • Beer Favoriting
  • Beer News Browsing
  • Beer Place Locator
  • Your Beer Stats Viewing
  • More to be announced soon...

I don't have an exact release date, but it should be ready within the next few months. To hold you over until then I've posted some screenshots for your viewing pleasure.

Beer Suggest Android App

Posted by AJ | Aug 12 2010 | 21:23 EDT | Discuss |
Android

It's been a long time since I've done anything new with the website, besides post reviews and rate some beers. Well, that changed when I recently picked up an Android based smart phone. After playing with it, I decided to create an Android application for Beer Suggest.

I'm currently in the early stages and it's going slow because lack of time and having to learn a new programming language and a new API. My plan for it's creation is to release it slowly, in pieces. The first part of the website I'd like to expose to the Android app, is the Places Locator. I've already began work and have a fairly good size portion of this code completed. This functionality will allow you to use your current location via GPS, or enter a location and it will pull up all breweries, beer bars, beer stores, and homebrew shops withing a mile radius selected by you. You will be able to view this information via a list or map and get more details about the location. You'll also be able to read reviews and dial up the selected location.

In the future I'd like to allow someone to search for beer, rate it and/or review it, directly from your phone. The application will remain in Beta until all components are completed. During the Beta stage I'll be taking feedback and fielding feature requests,

Before anyone asks, at this time I have no plans for developing an iPhone, Blackberry, or Palm application. Stay tuned for sneak peaks and future updates to the project.

Facebook Integration Now Live

Posted by AJG | Apr 28 2010 | 13:52 EDT | Discuss |

It's been a while since I've had time to work on new features for Beer Suggest, but I've finally found some free time. Similar to the Twitter integration launched last year, you can now integrate your Facebook account with Beer Suggest. Doing this will allow you to configure automatic status updates to your Facebook account when you rate/review beer and places. It's a great way to share the brews you have been trying with your friends who are not on Beer Suggest. It's a pretty simple process, and to make it easier, I've created a video tutorial, that will teach you how to use this new feature. Enjoy!

Place Locator Map Live

Posted by AJ | Jan 6 2010 | 14:39 EST | 2 comments |
Place Locator Map

Lately I've been working on how to make the places section easier to use. Often you are in a new place, say on vacation or for work, and you want to know how to find the nearest beer places in your area. Currently you can use the places locator to specify a location and mile radius, giving you a list of locations. To provide a graphical view I've created a Maps View.

The Maps View allows you to see your search results on a map while still distinguishing the different types of locations(bars, restaurants, homebrew shops, and beer stores). The left hand column has the results in text form along with some basic contact information. Clicking on the name in the left hand column will produce a pop up bubble from the marker on the map. You can also choose the more info link to read reviews and further information about the location.

In the future I would also like for breweries to be included in the locator search results, as well as being able to distinguish between a brewery and a brewpub.

Beer Reviews Change

Posted by AJG | Dec 12 2009 | 16:35 EST | Discuss |

I made a small change in the way reviews for beers work. Before you could only review a beer once. This might not sound like a big deal, but there are several circumstances where it would be useful to review a beer again. Case in point, I reviewed a bottle of fresh Stone RIS however, I also have a bottle from 2008 that I have been aging, so I would need the ability to review the beer multiple times. Another common case would be having a beer on cask or firkin versus from a bottle. There can be a huge flavor difference when it comes to aging or how the beer is served.

Also I had several requests to sort the reviews for each beer by the newest one first. Before hand the reviews were shown in a sequential order. Stay tuned for more updates, I've got a lot of great ideas, just not enough time to implement them all as fast as I wish I could!

Social Media Integration Live

Posted by AJG | Oct 25 2009 | 16:43 EDT | Discuss |

Today I launched the social media services section in beta. Everything should work correctly, but there is always the chance that something slipped by me. Starting today you can now link up your Twitter account with Beer Suggest. You can set it up so that a tweet is automatically posted anytime you rate a beer, review a beer, or review a place. I took the time to create a screencast that goes through step by step, showing you how to set it up.

Facebook will be the next service that I will add to the website. I don't have a time-line for this, but I'll be tackling that task next.

Twitter Integration Coming Soon

Posted by AJ | Oct 6 2009 | 15:32 EDT | Discuss |

It's been quite some time since my last update, so I thought I should address where I stand with the social media integration. I've recently had more time to tackle this enhancement and have made some very good headway. The plan is to release this feature with Twitter integration by the end of the month. It may come sooner than that, but I want to provide adequate time for testing.

When this feature is released there will be a new tab in you profile called "Social". This page will list all available services (Twitter at the time of release) and whether that service is enabled or not. From here you will be able to enable/disable the service and then configure it. After the service is enabled you'll choose an action (rate beer, review beer, review place) and then specify a template such as "Just tried X beer from X brewery - X/5". The X's in this example would be substituted with the name of the beer, name of the brewery, and rating. This template will be used to automatically post tweets to your twitter page when you perform one of the actions above.

Little Hiccup

Posted by AJ | Sep 1 2009 | 21:03 EDT | Discuss |

Wanted to apologize for the quick hiccup we experienced earlier. It only lasted for a minute or two, but that was enough to get a bunch of error messages from users. I was in the middle of pushing out some code changes. It should be fine now.

Social Media Integration

Posted by AJ | Aug 11 2009 | 09:54 EDT | Discuss |

I haven't posted anything in a little bit, so I thought I'd give everyone an update on what's happening behind the scenes at Beer Suggest. As the title implies, Beer Suggest will begin to integrate with some of the big social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. I'm currently in the planning/early development stages, so I don't have a whole lot of details, but more information will be coming soon. Depending on the demand other social media services could be added in the future.

This service will allow you to connect your Facebook or Twitter accounts to Beer Suggest and automatically tweet(on Twitter) or post status updates(on Facebook) whenever you rate and review beers and places. Stay tuned for more information in the near future!

Geocoding Not Working for the Momment

Posted by AJ | Jul 26 2009 | 22:04 EDT | Discuss |

Any section that uses geocoding is currently not working. This includes adding/editing breweries and places, and doing any sort of search based on a location and mile range. I'm currently working on correcting this issue.

Quick Places Update

Posted by AJ | May 26 2009 | 19:56 EDT | Discuss |

I released a few small changes today based on feedback I've received through the website. Most of these you may not notice, as they are small visual changes. One thing that you will notice is that places are now included in the site search. Any search you perform using the box in the upper right hand corner of every page will also include places in the search results. I'm still working on figuring out the best way to include breweries in the places search results. Also it's really not fair to only allow one label for a place. It' not uncommon to have both a bar and a restaurant, as well as many other combinations. Check back soon for updates on this.

Beer Places Released

Posted by AJG | May 17 2009 | 12:45 EDT | Discuss |

Yesterday was a great day. I got much more completed that I thought was possible. So right now I am launching the places section of the website. You can use the places section to write a review of your favorite bar, restaurant, home brew shop, or beer store. You can also use it to get more information, such as hours, and location.

There are currently two ways to find beer places near you. The first way is to browse the places directory. The directory lists all places by country, which you can then drill down to the state and city level. Once you get to the city level it will list all places in a neat table that you can search and sort.

The second way to quickly find places near you is to use the places locator. Here you enter a full or partial address, which can be as ambiguous as a city, or as specific as your home address, choose a mile radius, and select the places you are trying to find. Then simply click on the Find Beer Places button. The results will be displayed below in a table where you can then view and sort the results. You'll get some basic information as well as the distance the place is from the address you entered.

This has been a couple of months in the making, so it feels great to finally get it out there. Let me know what you like, what you don't like, or what else you would like the places section to do. Contact me via the feedback form, or hit the discuss link to talk about it in the forums.

Beer Places Release Date

Posted by AJG | May 15 2009 | 19:42 EDT | Discuss |

In my spare time I've been putting a lot of effort into finishing off the Beer Places section of the website. Today I've got some great news...it's almost ready! It needs a little polishing and integration, but all of the major components are completed. So this brings up the question of when am I releasing it? That depends on how much work I can get done this weekend. The best estimate I can give you is that it will be released sometime within the next two weeks. If things go very well I might be able to release it this coming Sunday. So check back soon! I'll post an update at the end of the weekend with an exact date, if it's not ready for Sunday.

Have a great weekend and don't forget it's American Craft Beer Week, so support your local brewery!

Beer Suggest is now on twitter. I'll be posting small updates on the progress of new features there, as well as sharing screen shots of said features. All major announcements will still be posted here on the site as well as a posting a snippet on twitter with a link.

I recently posted some more screen shots of the new "beer places" app on twitter, so feel free to head over there and start following Beer Suggest! The screenshots can also be found here and here.
