Hop Crisis. Crisis? What Crisis? A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This Imperial IPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma

Appearance - 5.0

An inch of creamy white head sits on top of a pale golden-orange beer. The head has some legs and sticks around for awhile. It leaves plenty of sticky lacing as it settles.

Aroma - 4.0

From the aroma I get light orange, citrus, bready malt and a hint of wood. It's got a nice nose, but not as pungent as I had hoped.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

Medium to full in body. The hops oils coat your mouth. It's got a creamy finish.

Taste - 3.5

There is some pine and caramel sweetness up front followed by some light citric notes. The finish is overpowered by oak, booziness, and a medium bitterness from the hops.

Overall - 3.5

A pretty decent imperial IPA, but The oak and booze stood out too much in the flavor department. The nose was also a little subdued for my preference. Despite these weaknesses it still turned out to be a worthwhile beer, certainly worth trying once.
