Scratch #44 Belgian Brown
Brewery: Troegs Brewing
Alcohol By Volume: 9.00%
Beer Style: Quadrupel Ale
Availability: Limited
Average of 1 rating: 3.5 stars.
Description:
Based on the winning recipe by Team America from the Troegs Metal Brewer in fall 2010. Featuring Special B and CaraBelge malts with a combination of Magnum hops for bittering, and Saaz hops for an herbal contrast to the caramel malts, along with Demararra sugar. For a unique twist on this style, we used a combination of Saaz whole-leaf hops, and more than 40 pounds of Zante currants in the hopback. We pitched Westmalle yeast for a complimenting spicy balance.

Appearance - 4.0
Pours a deep reddish-brown that is surprisingly clear. A light-tan head forms on top that quickly dissipates leaving little lace.
Aroma - 3.5
The nose gives off a little brown sugar, dark grapes and some alcohol. It has a nice aroma but it's not very pronounced.
Mouthfeel - 3.5
Medium to full in body with moderate carbonation. It has a somewhat syrupy feel to it.
Taste - 3.5
Starts out with some dark fruits, mostly plum with the slightest hint of grapes. The yeast character than displays a tiny spiciness before the beer finishes with a boozy sweetness.
Overall - 3.5
A pretty well rounded beer. It's nice trying the numerous number of styles Troeg's is putting out with the scratch beers. It makes me want to explore this style a little more.
