Description:
he brewers of Anchor Steam® Beer are proud to announce the release of our thirty-sixth annual Christmas Ale.
Every year since 1975 the brewers at Anchor have brewed a distinctive and unique Christmas Ale, which is available from early November to mid-January. The Ale's recipe is different every year—as is the tree on the label—but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons, appears born anew. Our tree for 2010 is the Ginkgo biloba tree.

Appearance - 4.0
Poured into a pint glass it produces an inch of light tan head. The head has excellent retention and holds out for most of the beer. The beer is dark brown in color with some light coming through.
Aroma - 3.5
Malty sweetness, clove, allspice, and a hint of earthy hops.
Mouthfeel - 3.0
Light to medium in body with prickly carbonation. I think it could use a little more body and have the carbonation tuned down a bit.
Taste - 3.5
A mixture of roasted and sweet malts hit the taste buds first. The spices from the nose then show up in the flavor followed by the earthy hops and a smoky character that leads into the finish.
Overall - 3.5
A decent beer, even though I'm not much of a typical holiday ale drinker. It lacks body, and has a little too much carbonation, although I do like the smoky finish.
