Scratch #38 2010 IPA #2
Brewery: Troegs Brewing
Alcohol By Volume: 7.70%
Beer Style: Imperial IPA
Availability: Limited
Average of 1 rating: 4.0 stars.
Description:
The hop "research" continues in the Scratch Series with #38, our second of four Imperial Pale Ales. Featuring Centennial and Chinook hops, #38 adds a heavier malt bill and pours a brilliant golden amber with a creamy off-white head that leaves abundant lacing down the side of the glass. Unfiltered like nearly all of our Scratch beers, #38 has stunning clarity: even our lab guy thought we filtered this one!
Due to some serious dry-hopping, #38 has a predominantly grassy citrus nose, and the flavor follows suit, overwhelming nearly all the bready Munich malt used in this brew. #38 leaves a lingering grassy bitterness on the tongue, making sure you know a lot of hops were sacrificed for this brew. Two down, two to go. Enjoy!

Appearance - 4.5
Pours a clear medium orange with visible carbonation. A 1/2 inch of fluffy white head sits on top of the beer. It's got nice retention and leaves some nice lacing just like Scratch #37.
Aroma - 3.5
The aroma doesn't stand out very well, I do get some hints of flowery/earthy hops. As the beer warms up, more of the caramel sweetness comes out.
Mouthfeel - 3.5
Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Has a somewhat creamy finish.
Taste - 4.0
Bready and caramel malts hit the pallet first, followed by some citrus flavors. The citrus is quickly squashed by the earthy and floral hops from the nose. The malt backbone makes a brief appearance in the finish with the floral hops leaving a light bitterness.
Overall - 4.0
A very enjoyable beer with a nice display of hops. I'm enjoying this one more than the first IPA (Scratch #37). Can't wait to try the next two in the series.
