Description:

As the codename implies, the main flavor in Scratch #35 is 100 pounds of fresh Citra hops. This year's Oregon hop harvest took place in mid-September and we received the freshest, wettest Citra hops right off the vine. Opening the boxes of fresh hops, we were blown away at the strength and color of this Oregonian green gold. Our hopback was not large enough to accommodate all the hops so we added them to the lauter tun and ran the hot wort through the hops.

Pouring a cloudy gold-orange color, Scratch #35 yields an arresting blend of ripe orange and grapefruit aromas with just enough bitterness to balance the sweetness imparted by the honey. Kettle additions of Amarillo and Palisade hops nicely complement the fresh hops.

As this beer is a celebration of hops at their freshest, drink this one as soon as possible for maximum enjoyment.

Appearance - 4.5

Poured into a pint glass it produces a 1/2 inch of creamy white head. It has pretty good retention leaving some light lacing. The beer is mostly clear and light golden orange in color with visible carbonation.

Aroma - 4.0

The aroma is full of Citra goodness. The Citra hops produce a citrus and orange aroma.

Mouthfeel - 4.5

Light to medium in body with moderate carbonation. It's got a nice creamy feel to it.

Taste - 5.0

This beer benefits from warming up a little bit to showcase all of the juicy hops. Citrus and orange are most prominent with some lemon notes. The malts present provide a semi sweet backbone to balance out the hops. It's got a nice grapefruit finish with a perfect bitterness.

Overall - 5.0

This beer is extremely drinkable and refreshing. It's got a lighter feel but with a ton of flavor. The abv on this one is pretty high at 7.2 so it can catch up on you quick. This was one of the stand outs in the Scratch series as of late. If you are in the central PA area, pick up a 6 pack before they are gone!
