Description:

The much anticipated release of Deschutes Brewery’s Black Butte XXII is being cancelled this year. The Imperial version of the brewery’s popular Black Butte Porter, this year made with chilies, dark chocolate and orange peel, has been a favorite since it was first brewed in 2008 for the brewery’s anniversary.

The experimental chocolate that was used in this year’s formulation never fully dissolved in the beer. While most of it dissolved, a portion formed a layer on the surface of the beer. While the beer tastes perfectly fine, the visual in the bottle is not up to our long-held commitment to quality and positive customer experience.

Pushing boundaries like we do means that things don’t always turn out the way we expect. However, we promise to never back away from the line, even when the risk is great.

Appearance - 4.5

On tap at the brewpub in the Pearl District. The beer was poured into a tulip. It produced 2 fingers of light brown head with good retention and leaving some nice lacing. The beer is a very dark brownish-black, but not pitch black.

Aroma - 4.0

The nose contains chocolate, roasted malts, and hints of orange.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

Medium to full in body with light carbonation. It's very smooth and somewhat creamy.

Taste - 4.0

Toasted malts up front followed by chocolate infused with hints of orange. There is a slight alcohol presence in the finish, not near as much as I would have expected for a beer this big.

Overall - 4.0

This was a delicious beer, it's a shame it couldn't be bottled. If you are in the Portland area, I'd highly recommend stopping by and checking this one out on tap, while it lasts.
