Appearance - 4.5
Pours an inch of light tan head into a tulip glass. Head retention is very good and there is some nice clingy lacing left behind. The beer is dark and black with plum highlights.
Aroma - 4.0
The nose consists of brown sugar, crystal malt, and citrus notes.
Mouthfeel - 3.5
Light-medium in body with active carbonation that stings the tongue.
Taste - 3.5
Dark roasted malts hit the taste buds first, followed by a bit of nuttiness. It finishes with a piny bitterness that sticks around in the aftertaste. From the nose I wasn't expecting the taste to exhibit as much of the hops flavor as it did.
Overall - 4.0
This is a great beer, but I'm still getting used to the flavor combination between the west coast hops and roasted malts. It would be hard for me to figure out if I'm in the mood for it b/c of the blend of flavors. Regardless; this is one of the better of the 5-6 beers I've tried of this new style.
