Description:
Like Hops? You'll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main.
Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed off-ed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it's about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Surly furious is complex, interesting and really a well developed beer. The brewer seems to know the stock well and does a fantastic job keeping quality as the center.

Appearance - 5.0
It pours an inch of off-white head into a pint glass. It has a very nice retention and leaves some decent lacing. The beer is clear and has a medium amber hue with visible carbonation.
Aroma - 4.5
This beer has a huge aroma consisting of a strong caramel malt presence, along with pine and citrus.
Mouthfeel - 4.5
Light to medium in body with moderate carbonation and a somewhat creamy feel.
Taste - 4.5
Up front there is a little bit of the caramel malt from the aroma. It's quickly followed by varying degrees of citrus before hitting a light pine and heavy grapefruit rind wall. The strong bitterness lasts into the finish along with some malty notes.
Overall - 5.0
Best IPA I've had from a can, so far. It's somehow extremely bitter, yet malty at the same time, which balances it out. I love the 16oz cans Surly produces, only wish I could obtain them easier!
