Description:
Emphasizing that complexity of character can arise from simple elements, this ale is made with three malts and one hop. Its light amber color and slightly spicy malt character are derived from the use of German Dark Munich Malt and Rye Malt respectively. North American 2-row barley combines with the other grains to lay the foundation for the hop onslaught to come. Summit hops are used exclusively in the boil for bitterness, flavor and aroma but it doesn’t end there. Post-fermentation dry hopping allows the 9.5% ABV monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma to join the 100 IBUs already present. This beer should greet you with a pungent citrus blast, provide a spicy yet round middle and finish with a brisk, clean bitterness.

Appearance - 4.5
About an inch of sticky white head accumulates when poured into an over-sized wine glass. Head retention is good and it leaves some very nice lacing. The beer is clear and light amber in color.
Aroma - 3.5
The nose isn't as strong as I would hav expected. I can make out a bit of orange and citrus and something else that is hard to describe, but it's not sweet or fruity.
Mouthfeel - 4.0
Medium-full in body with good carbonation. It has a somewhat creamy feel, before hops oils coat the mouth.
Taste - 4.5
Orange hits first followed by some caramel malt and then some citrus flavors. It finishes with some tropical flavors and a nice bitterness that lingers. The 10% alcohol is hidden pretty well, as I can only make out small portions of it.
Overall - 4.5
My first DIPA in a can, and I enjoy it. I had Obliteration VI a few months ago so an imperial IPA using only Summit hops isn't new to me, although I'm not quite sold on Summit hops for a single hop ale, but it could work in combination with others. Still this is a fine brew, and I'd certainly pick it up again.
