Description:

Brace yourself, bereaved fans of Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, for your joyous new day has finally come! It’s like your first crush–you know, the one who broke your heart when she/he decided to go to the junior prom with what’s-their-name–has suddenly come back to you to go for a cruise down the main drag on Friday night. It’s like…it’s like finding that long lost gold watch, given to you by your father, who got it from his father, who got it from his father. It’s like when your best buddy in the world, Sam the family dog, finally sauntered up the front porch steps one sunny afternoon after having been on a six-week runaway. Yes, it’s just like that.

And it’s like this: A brilliantly hopped double IPA–providing a wake up call of floral and citrus aromas–backed up by a deliciously smooth and dark roasted maltiness. You get the best of both worlds with this black double IPA.

Appearance - 5.0

Pours 3/4 of an inch of light tan head into a goblet. The head sticks around a good while and leaves some nice rings of lace. The beer is a very dark brown, practically black with a little bit of red.

Aroma - 4.5

A very pungent aroma. Lots of sweet malt mixed in with a tad of citrus. There's also a good bit of dark fruit present.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

Medium in body. Resinous feeling from the hops and some good carbonation.

Taste - 4.5

Piny hops up front followed by some roasted and sweet malts. Some dark fruit (plum comes to mind) shows up next followed by a little bit of citrus and lot of pine. It finishes on the bitter side. Alcohol content is well hidden.

Overall - 4.5

Overall this is a great imperial black IPA. It's not technically it's own style, but I've tried 2 or 3 beers similar to this from other breweries. It's sort of like an imperial IPA but more malt based and black.
