Otter Creek Russian Imperial Stout
Brewery: Otter Creek Brewing & Wolaver's Organic Ales
Alcohol By Volume: 10.60%
Beer Style: Imperial Stout
Availability: Seasonal
Average of 1 rating: 3.5 stars.
Description:
The style was first brewed in England for the Russian Czar and it is the king of stouts. Plenty of big malt flavors- chocolate and roasted- and high alcohol with lower carbonation and mild hops.
We brewed this beer with double the malts and four times the hops of regular stouts!
Otter Creek Russian Imperial Stout clocks in around 10% ABV- a beer to be savored responsibly. True to style, this beer will last for years so you may want to stock up on a few bottles for your cellar while it's available.
Russian Imperial Stouts pair well with creamy cheeses such as camembert (we recommend Vermont-made!), decadent chocolate desserts, or a hearty meal.

Appearance - 4.5
Pours an inch of creamy brown head into a chalice glass. It has great retention and leaves a nice ring of lacing as it settles. The beer is pitch black, no light coming through whatsoever. Looks great for the style.
Aroma - 4.0
A huge roasty nose. Cocoa, coffee grounds and some light bitter hops. There's also a faint smell of alcohol.
Mouthfeel - 3.0
Medium in body, it's a little watery, would have liked a more fuller feel. Despite that it has a nice creamy feeling to it. Good carbonation.
Taste - 3.5
Up front there is a lot of smoky flavor combined with coffee. It finishes with a bitter, dark chocolate that lingers after you swallow. A lot of the subtle flavors are lost and just don't stand out enough.
Overall - 3.5
An alright Russian Imperial Stout, but the thinness and the lack of balanced taste killed it for me. This is a fairly new release, so I wouldn't mind trying it after they have worked more with the recipe.
