Description:
Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale is our homage to the craft and heritage of America’s brewers. Recipes calling for the use of pumpkins in beer date back to early colonial times, when brewers sought to extend their supply of costly imported malt with locally grown ingredients, such as squash and “pompions.”
In that spirit, we brew our ale with the addition of pumpkin to the mash, along with traditional spices to create a delicious American original.

Appearance - 4.0
Clear (not muddied) and clean look, with a mostly yellow body with a little orange tint. The head is foamy, but not as shiny as a normal ale. Looks more like a lager than an ale in many ways.
Aroma - 3.5
A spicy nose, with clear hints of cloves and cinnamon to come.
Mouthfeel - 4.0
Smooth, not gritty like you might expect from other pumpkins. More bubbly than I expected, which helps dissolve any thickened body that might be there. My mouth was a little dry after I had a sip.
Taste - 3.0
The pumpkin spices and spicy hops overwhelmed any taste of pumpkin that I could really taste. Spicy, instead of creamy, like pumpkin pie without the sweetness. The beer reminds me of a seasonal lager, although a well brewed with its flavors - it's rather consistant.
Overall - 3.5
I think this beer has more in common with an amber lager than a pumpkin ale. Pumpkin spice is evident throughout, but it overwhelms any of the ale. For what it is, this pumpkin beer was enjoyable, but probably just a seasonal substitute; I'd pass it over for a top shelf beer the rest of the year.
