Description:

Kerplunk! Imperial Chocolate Stout is named for the delicious sound made as large amounts of Wilbur chocolate and west coast hops are added directly into the simmering brew kettle. This hefty black imperial-style stout boasts a rich caramel sweetness lavished by a robust, deep-roasted heartiness you can sink your two front teeth into. The bold flavors found in Kerplunk! are produced using a generous blend of roasted barley, crystal malts and locally produced chocolate. The resulting brew exhibits a deliciously complex and unique profile of subtle mocha coffee and intense chocolate, balanced nicely by the underlying roasted hop bitterness. This is a balanced strong brew boasting an A.B.V. of 8.1% that can creep up on you.

Almost perfect, just a little too much bitterness. Helluva beer though! I'd love to see this recepie refined.

Appearance - 5.0

Had this on tap at the brewery. It pours a very dark brown with no light coming through. It has 2 fingers of creamy, dark tan head that has a great retention and leaves plenty of lacing.

Aroma - 4.0

Smokey roasted malts, chocolate, and hops. It smells great, the hops are more subtle in the aroma than the malts an chocolate.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

A full bodied beer with moderate carbonation. It's soft and creamy, yet still has an aggressive bitterness.

Taste - 4.5

Smoked, roasted malts hit first, followed by the chocolate. Next the hops kick in adding a pretty aggressive bitterness to the beer. The hops are complimented by some bitter sweet chocolate towards the end.

Overall - 4.5

A very drinkable imperial chocolate stout. It's a bitter-sweet chocolate flavor, favoring the bitterness over the sweetness. It's put together well and is a great stout.
