Scratch #18 2009
Brewery: Troegs Brewing
Alcohol By Volume: 7.30%
Beer Style: Rye Beer
Availability: Limited
Average of 1 rating: 4.5 stars.
Description:
We started with the same grain bill as Scratch #12 (IPA) and substituted 25% rye for the base malt giving Scratch #18 a creamy mouth feel and a full-bodied taste.
Mount Hood and Chinook hops are combined here for flavoring and aroma, and Warrior hops are used for overall bitterness.
The rye plays off the Mount Hood hops, with both ingredients releasing an herbal, spicy flavor. Cheers.

Appearance - 4.5
Pours 2 1/2 fingers of fluffy white head. It has great retention, and leaves some nice lacing. It has a golden amber appearance with a good amount of carbonation bubbles visible.
Aroma - 3.5
A very spicy aroma with a little bit of citrus hops coming through. As the beer warms the citrus aroma becomes more apparent.
Mouthfeel - 4.5
A medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. It has a smooth, creamy feeling to it and a dry finish from the rye malts.
Taste - 4.5
Lots of rye flavor in here, with a little bit of citrus much like the aroma. The rye dominates the flavor with it's spiciness, but there are some subtle sweeter malts to help balance it. Finishes pretty bitter with a little bit of citrus.
Overall - 4.5
A great "big rye" beer. This ranks up there with the likes of Bear Republic's Hot Rod Rye. I'm glad I picked up a 6 pack, this is definitely worth trying.
