Description:
This Russian Imperial Stout is a sipper. Problem is that you want to sip it all night. Look for this one to be released when the leaves change color and Halloween is approaching. Brewed with a blend of 8 different malts, oats and candi sugar. This huge stout reflects Surly's commitment to brewing intensely flavored beers in small batches. Only 25 barrels of this beer were brewed.

Had this on tap at Risque Cafe in Chicago. It was served in a snifter. Big brown head that stuck around the entire drink and left massive amounts of lacing. The beer looks just like the name, pure darkness.
Aroma - 4.0
Heavy malty aroma, coffee, nuts, and charred malts. There is also some dark fruit in the background and some piny hops.
Mouthfeel - 4.0
Very good mouthfeel, it's sits somewhere between medium and full in body. It's very smooth and creamy in the mouth.
Taste - 3.5
I found the taste to be more on the sweeter malty side, however there are plenty of roasted malts present too. A pretty complex taste with a good bit of piny hops in the finish. There definitely notes of chocolate and vanilla as well.
Overall - 3.5
A very unique Russian Imperial Stout, although it ended up being a little too much on the sweet side for my liking. I probably won't search this one out again, but it was nice to get a chance to try it.
