Description:

Insanity, just released this past November, 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Insanity is 11.1% ABV. It is best enjoyed in a brandy snifter and served at 45-50 degrees F.

Appearance - 4.5

Produces a half inch of off-white head when poured into a tulip glass. It has pretty good retention for a barrel aged beer with such a high abv. It leaves little lacing on the glass, but produces a thick ring as it settles. The beer is clear and has a dark brownish-red hue.

Aroma - 4.0

It has a pretty complex nose. Immediately there is a strong malt presence along with hints of vanilla, oak and bourbon.

Mouthfeel - 4.0

Medium in body with moderate carbonation. It has a slightly syrupy feel to it.

Taste - 4.0

A little bit of vanilla and oak up front followed by dark fruit, plum specifically. A splash of bourbon comes next. It has some residual sweetness in the finish along with some alcohol burn.

Overall - 4.0

A very well crafted beer. It's very strong but isn't overwhelmed by the barrel flavor. Well worth seeking out.
